Michael Boy (ACD), continued the development of his model Malte - a 1-dimensional model to predict new aerosol formation in the lower troposphere. The model includes aerosol dynamics, achieved by the new developed UHMA ( University of Helsinki Multicomponent Aerosol Model ), troposphere chemistry, meteorology and the emission of volatile organic compounds from the biosphere.

Even though many field campaigns, laboratory experiments and new modelling approaches have improved our understanding to some extent, detailed mechanisms responsible for the formation of new particles in the planetary boundary layer are still not completely elucidated to date. Malte merged individually developed codes to investigate the formation and growth processes responsible for the secondary organic aerosols under realistic atmospheric conditions.
