Patricia (Paty) Romero-Lankao

Paty Romero-Lankao co-organized the first International Conference on Carbon Management at Urban and Regional Levels: Connecting Development Global Issues, which was held 4-8 September 2006 in Mexico City. The conference brought together the natural and social science research communities as well as policy advisors and analysts supporting the decision-making process.

Paty has been a member of the Steering Scientific Committee (SSC) of the Global Carbon Project since 2002, which is sponsored by the IHDP (International Human Dimensions Programme), the IGBP (International Geosphere-Biosphere Program), and the World Climate Research Program (WCRP). The SSC is in charge of designing and implementing a reserach agenda. Some members are organizing a conference as part of their science plan activity, Urban and Regional Carbon Management (URCM). URCM fosters and coordinates place-based carbon budgets using a comparative study and historical approach to urban, regional, and global carbon footprints, their determinants, trajectories, and management opportunities.

Paty is also a member of an ad hoc committee created by the Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate of the National Academies. The committee seeks to identify lessons learned from past assessments to guide future global change assessment activities of the US Climate Change Science Program (CCSP). The study will be approached in two steps: first, the committee will conduct a comparative analysis of past assessments that have stated objectives similar to the CCSP. Second, the committee will identify approaches in terms of geographic scale, scope, assessment entity, and timing, and develop products that are most effective for meeting the CCSP's stated objectives for assessments.

Paty is in Working Group II contribution to the IPCC's Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) in two tasks: as Co-Lead Author of the 7th chapter, "Industry, Settlement, and Society," and as a member of the team in charge of the IPCC Working Group II and III on "the cross-cutting themes of Adaptation-Mitigation and Sustainable Development."
