Dr. Yiming HE |
Yiming He is a professor of economics at Ocean University of China and is currently a visiting scientist at CCB for one year. He is helping to develop the Coastal Urban Affairs Program initiated by CCB under the guidance of Dr. Glantz and Dr. Ye.
Yiming's research interest is on the impacts of climate change from social, economical, political and ethical perspectives. Currently, at CCB, Yiming focuses his research specifically on impacts of global warming on China 's coastal cities, aiming to establishing a framework of strategy and policy tools to tackle the various issues faced by coastal urban areas in the context of climate change.
These issues include sea level rise caused by expansion of warmed sea water and melting ice sheets in the two hemispheres; flooding caused by tropical cyclones (particularly by typhoons); inundation resulted from sea level rise, heavy rainfall and storm surges, as well as land subsidence; coastal erosion; logging and salinity; “heat island” effect aggravated by air temperature rise and so on. Economic analytical tools are needed to evaluate the incurred costs of property, infrastructure, agriculture, aquaculture, industry and service sectors, cultural values and human legacy. As to strategies for mitigation, migration and modification, a huge portfolio of technological, behavioral, managerial and policy elements must be available. While dealing with these issues, issues like intro and inter generational equity, regional disparity, ethics and values, etc, have to be stressed.
Since Yiming came to CCB in March 2007, he actively attended various conferences, seminars, and talks held at NCAR and the University of Colorado in Boulder. He has collected information from various sources and helped to expand CCB's database for Coastal Urban Affairs Program research efforts.
During FY08, he will continue his efforts in preparing a research report for CCB.
